Dog Day

It was a rare sunny day in Portland yesterday, so I pulled my fiance Char away from studying and we took a stroll around 23rd in NW Portland.  We swapped cameras to get the creative juices flowing.  Dogs were everywhere yesterday!  One guy even asked us to take a photo of the neat trick his dog does – jumping through his arms – and send it to him.  I played around with lens flare a bit with the Nikon 50mm 1.8d lens.  Most modern lenses are well protected against flare, but I actually like the look of creatively used flare, especially in photos of people.  After all the dogs (including a litter that was in the care of a homeless couple), we moved on to 23rd and shot photos of, well, mostly each other =P.

Photo Workshop with Tom Hassler

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I attended a fall colors workshop last week with Tom Hassler, and we had the critique session yesterday at Newspace.  It was a great hike out to Tamanawas Falls, and it was wonderful to see everyone’s photos from the hike.  Here are some of my images from the trip.

The Big Picture

Some incredible glimpses of humanity from places that we usually only see images of war or conflict from.  From the Boston Globe’s The Big Picture page.

Time Of War Panel Discussion Tomorrow

Anyone in Portland should consider going to the Time of War panel discussion tomorrow.  It is from 12-1 pm at the Portland Art Museum.  Joel Preston Smith, Randy Rasmussen of the Oregonian, and Todd Tubutis of Blue Sky Gallery will all be there, and it is free to the public.

I had the pleasure of meeting Joel a few times out of pure chance at a local coffee shop.  He is a very friendly, interesting photographer.  He also wants people to come and critique his images unsparingly.  I love to see pro photographers who remain humble and who keep testing ideas and following their inspiration, so I will definitely be there.  Here’s the link for the event.

Multnomah Falls Hike

I went on a hike with several members of the Portland Jet Alumni Association (JETAA) at Multnomah Falls this morning.  After a lot of time spent photographing things in the city, it was great to get out today and do some landscape work again.  Photographing in nature is really what I love the most.
